The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team has arrested a second suspect in the murder of Monica Dube, the Economic Freedom Fighters’ Tshwane Region 2 secretary and election coordinator.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said investigators positively linked a 39-year-old man to the killing after an intelligence-driven investigation. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday evening. He is expected to appear in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, on a charge of murder. Police have not named him.
Dube, 44, was shot and killed at her home in Wallmannsthal, north of Pretoria, on 13 June 2026. Family members were in the house.
The new arrest follows that of Sipho Lucky Mahlangu, 34, who was taken into custody in July. Mahlangu has appeared several times in the Cullinan court. He remains in custody after abandoning a bail application. He faces charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
The National Prosecuting Authority alleges that Mahlangu and another man forced their way into the house through a window in the early hours of 13 June. The pair allegedly shot Dube in the head in her bedroom while her children were present, then fled with her cellphone.
Dube’s daughter spotted Mahlangu at a taxi rank on 4 July and alerted police. He was arrested the same day, about three weeks after the killing.
IOL reported that Dube had survived an earlier attack in March 2026, when she was shot 11 times and spent weeks in intensive care.
A family member told the Daily Sun the second arrest brought some relief, but not an end to the case. “We feel a bit safe now. But we need the person who orchestrated the hit to be found and arrested,” the relative said.
Mathe said Mahlangu remains in custody after several appearances. The motive has not been stated. The investigation continues.
