Gauteng police are following a lead after 14-year-old twin brothers were stabbed to death inside their home in Mamelodi West, Tshwane.

The boys’ mother found their bodies in a bedroom when she returned from work on Friday, 2 October. They had multiple stab wounds. Police were called to the house and opened a murder investigation. No one has been arrested.

Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the Gauteng police spokesperson, said there were no signs of forced entry. She said detectives were following information, but would not describe it.

“Unfortunately, I cannot dwell much into the investigation, lest I jeopardise it,” Nevhuhulwi said. “We hope the information will lead us somewhere, and it will also assist us in correcting and unravelling the circumstances that led to this gruesome incident.”

She said earlier that police had been shown the bodies of the twins in the bedroom. The motive is not known.

The names of the brothers have not been released.

People in Mamelodi West have reacted with shock. The circumstances of the attack remain unclear, and police have not said whether the boys were alone in the house before their mother came home.

Detectives are still trying to establish who was in the house, how the attackers got in, and what led to the stabbings. Nevhuhulwi asked that the inquiry not be discussed in detail while that work continues.

This is a developing story.
