Investigation Underway After Early-Morning Discovery

A tragic discovery near the University of Limpopo has left students, residents, and authorities searching for answers after a 22-year-old woman was found dead near the institution's perimeter fence on Sunday morning.

Police in Mankweng confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened following the discovery, which was made along Sovenga Street, adjacent to the university campus. Officers reportedly received information about a woman lying motionless near the campus fence during routine patrols in the area at approximately 06:00.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the body of a young woman positioned near a trench running alongside the fence. Emergency medical personnel were called to the location and confirmed that the woman had died.

Police Examining the Circumstances

According to police, the woman's body was found with her head positioned inside a trench adjacent to the campus boundary. Initial observations reportedly revealed no visible external injuries. A bag containing identification documents and a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) card was recovered near the scene

Investigators have not yet established the exact cause of death.

Police say one possibility being examined is whether the woman may have accidentally fallen into the trench. However, authorities have emphasized that investigations are still at an early stage and no definitive conclusions have been reached.

Officials have urged the public to avoid speculation while forensic and investigative processes continue.

University Community in Mourning

The incident has sent shockwaves through the university community.

The University of Limpopo later confirmed that the deceased was a student at the institution. The university expressed sadness over the loss and extended condolences to the student's family, friends, fellow students, and members of staff affected by the tragedy.

The institution has also appealed for patience and sensitivity, emphasizing that the cause of death remains under official investigation. University officials urged members of the public not to circulate unverified information that could cause additional distress to the family.

For many students, the incident has raised concerns about safety in areas surrounding the campus, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.

Questions Awaiting Answers

At this stage, investigators are working to reconstruct the events leading up to the woman's death and determine whether any other factors may have contributed to the incident.

An inquest has been opened, which will allow authorities to establish the circumstances and cause of death through further examination and evidence gathering.

Police have not yet publicly released the student's identity, as family-notification procedures were still being completed.

Community Awaits Findings

The discovery has left many in Sovenga and the wider Limpopo community awaiting answers.

While preliminary observations found no visible signs of injury, investigators say it is essential that all evidence be thoroughly examined before any determination can be made regarding what led to the young woman's death.

For now, attention remains focused on the ongoing investigation as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding a tragedy that has shaken the university community.
