DR Congo has recorded 10,668 confirmed Ebola cases, including 5,198 related deaths, according to the latest update from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

The figures are as of 4 November, using data up to 3 November. The ECDC says community transmission is ongoing in the country.

Where the outbreak stands

Eight DR Congo provinces are affected: Ituri, Nord-Kivu, Sud-Kivu, Tshopo, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, Sud Ubangi and Nord Ubangi.

The ECDC updated its page on 5 November. It lists the outbreak as a multi-country event caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

Other countries

  • Nigeria reported a case on 20 October. The patient was medically evacuated to Switzerland, and 62 contacts were under follow-up as of 3 November.
  • Kenya had reported nine confirmed cases, including two deaths, as of 26 October. The ECDC says all were linked to the first case.
  • Uganda's outbreak has ended, according to the ECDC.

Risk assessment

Four DR Congo-linked cases have been medically evacuated or imported to the European Economic Area since May, to Germany, the Netherlands and France. The ECDC estimates the likelihood of infection for people living in the EU and EEA as "very low". For EU and EEA residents in or travelling to affected areas, it estimates the likelihood as "low".

What we do not yet know

  • How quickly new cases are being confirmed, since the ECDC figures lag the data they are based on.
  • Whether South African health authorities have changed their own risk assessment in light of the latest figures.
