ActionSA says it will use coalition talks in Tshwane to push for Dr Nasiphi Moya to remain executive mayor for another five years, and says it will walk away from parties that will not agree to its priorities.
The party's Michael Beaumont said: “We will be negotiating to ensure that Dr Nasiphi Moya gets five more years.” He added: “If a political party is unwilling to work with us on those priorities, we will show them the door. If they are willing to work with us, we will work with them.”
ActionSA's conditions
Beaumont listed the party's priorities as building institutions to investigate corruption, addressing illegal immigration at local government level, and improving basic services such as roads, electricity, water and refuse collection. ActionSA also wants to end what it calls the “revolving door” of mayors in the capital, and says it would not back candidates with a record of corruption or failure.
Provisional results show ActionSA winning 27 wards in Tshwane, up from none in 2021. Projections by the CSIR, based on provisional data, put the party at about 22.7% of the vote in the metro and show the DA likely to lead in Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni without a majority.
What the other parties are saying
Beaumont said ActionSA “has committed itself that we will negotiate with any political party across the political spectrum”, provided there is a programme of delivery and anti-corruption action.
ANC deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane said: “It is premature for us to start talking because the ANC is open to talk to everyone and work with everyone as long as we ensure there's stability.”
DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis said his party would be talking to many parties, adding: “We will not be having these discussions via the media.”
What happens next
Parties are expected to have about two weeks after the IEC declares final results to agree who will lead hung councils. The IEC has said results remain provisional until objections and verification are complete, and has indicated a declaration on Sunday 8 November.
What we do not yet know
- Final seat numbers in Tshwane, which will decide how many partners a coalition needs.
- Whether the ANC, the DA or any other party will agree to ActionSA's demand on the mayoralty.
- The exact deadline for the council's first sitting and mayoral election.
