Andrea Johnson, the former head of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), and Feroz Khan, a former Crime Intelligence deputy head, were arrested on Friday 30 October on charges of defeating the ends of justice, according to published reports.

The charges relate to allegations, aired at the Madlanga Commission, that Johnson accessed a confidential police case docket in 2018 and passed it to Khan. Both are presumed innocent, and neither has been convicted of anything. The reports did not carry a response from either of them.

What is alleged

It is alleged that Johnson accessed and leaked to Khan a confidential SAPS docket in 2018, according to published reports. The docket concerned an assault and intimidation complaint laid against Khan by a female colleague, a brigadier. The allegation is that the leak gave Khan the complainant's version and let him prepare a warning statement before a formal interview.

The pair are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court after arrest warrants were authorised on Thursday 29 October, the reports said. No appearance date or bail details have been published.

How the case reached this point

In July 2026 a witness identified only as Witness O told the Madlanga Commission about an email that allegedly showed Johnson forwarding the docket to Khan, according to published coverage. Johnson's earlier affidavit, dated 10 July, called the claims vague and unsupported by particulars.

When questioned, Johnson invoked her constitutional right against self-incrimination under Section 35(1) of the Constitution, saying the commission's fact-finding mandate does not override that protection. In that affidavit she confirmed the matter had been referred to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which must decide whether to prosecute her. She resigned as IDAC head in July 2026, the reports said.

Messages and evidence put to the commission also pointed to a close relationship between Johnson and Khan; Johnson confirmed a close relationship when she was questioned on 30 July, according to published coverage.

Khan's other pending case

Khan was dismissed from SAPS with immediate effect on 2 September 2026 after he failed to appear before a designated senior officer in an expedited disciplinary process, SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed. The Labour Court had earlier dismissed his urgent application to stop that process.

He also faces a separate case in the Kempton Park Magistrates' Court. He was arrested in May 2026 with Gauteng Hawks head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa and businessman Tariq Downes over alleged unlawful possession of precious metals and defeating the ends of justice. Prosecutors allege Khan and Kadwa intervened to free Downes after an incident at OR Tambo in May 2021. The accused were granted R20,000 bail and the matter is before the court. All are presumed innocent.
