The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of a heatwave in parts of the Eastern Cape until Sunday and of extremely high veld-fire conditions across most of the Northern Cape on Friday 30 October.
The heatwave warning covers places in the Chris Hani and Alfred Nzo district municipalities, where persistently high temperatures are expected until Sunday 1 November. The report we reviewed gave no temperature values.
The warnings
SAWS has warned of extremely high veld-fire conditions in most parts of the Northern Cape. Conditions there are fine and hot to very hot, with cloud and mist along the west.
The UVB sunburn index is high in Gauteng and very high in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and residents are advised to take precautions against prolonged sun exposure.
Weather across the provinces
Most of the country is fine and warm to hot. In Mpumalanga, morning fog gives way to afternoon showers and thundershowers along the escarpment and eastern Highveld. The eastern Free State and the extreme west of KwaZulu-Natal can expect isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers. The Eastern Cape has coastal fog in the morning and evening in places, and is otherwise warm to hot.
For Friday and Saturday, 30 and 31 October, SAWS said in a post on 28 October to expect partly cloudy and hot to very hot conditions, cool to warm in places, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers.
