Motorists face another steep fuel price increase in November, with early data pointing to petrol rising by about R2.26 a litre.

The projections come from the Central Energy Fund's daily data as at 14 October 2026. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announces the final adjustments, which one report says take effect on Wednesday, 4 November, the day of the local government elections.

The projected increases by fuel grade

According to the Central Energy Fund data, the projected changes per litre are:

One report gives the projected inland 50ppm diesel price as R34.75. That does not match the R1.46 increase, so we have used R34.25 and flagged it for checking.

What is driving the increase

The only driver named in the reports we reviewed is the oil price, which one report put at about $95 a barrel and higher than at its previous update.

A group called Concerned Citizens of South Africa has called for the General Fuel Levy to be cut. The reports do not say the levy is changing.

What we do not yet know

  • The final prices, which depend on data to the end of the month.
  • How much of the increase comes from the exchange rate versus the oil price. The reports we reviewed do not say.
  • Whether Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's 21 October mini-budget touches the fuel levy.
  • The exact effective date. Confirm with the department's announcement.
  • Second confirmation needed: all figures trace to one data source relayed by two reports. Check them against the Central Energy Fund's own data.
