The grim tally of women’s bodies discovered in Ekurhuleni has risen to 11 after police confirmed a second find in two days.
On Sunday, 27 September 2026, the body of a woman was discovered in an open veld near Rhokana Road in Springs at around midday. A security company vehicle on patrol spotted the body and alerted authorities. Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the woman was found partially clothed and appeared to have been strangled.
All necessary role-players were mobilised, including the dedicated task team investigating the Ekurhuleni murder cases, Crime Scene Management, Investigative Psychology Services, detectives and Crime Intelligence.
This discovery comes just one day after the body of a woman was found inside Mooifontein Cemetery in the Vusimusi section of Tembisa South on Saturday morning. That victim, later identified in some reports as Ntombifuthi Nxumalo, was found partially or fully naked and had sustained serious head injuries consistent with stoning. A suspect linked to the Tembisa case was arrested in Tzaneen, Limpopo, after allegedly fleeing the scene.
The series of discoveries began in mid-July 2026 and has sparked widespread fear and anger across Gauteng. Several of the earlier victims were found partially or fully unclothed, with some showing signs of sexual assault or restraint. Police have repeatedly cautioned that while some cases share similarities, there is not yet sufficient evidence to confirm they are all the work of a single perpetrator.
Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni has confirmed that a joint command group involving senior police leadership and crime intelligence continues to monitor the investigations closely.
The latest finds have intensified community anxiety. Residents in Tembisa and Springs have expressed deep fear for the safety of women, with some reporting changing their daily routines and avoiding travelling alone, particularly at night.
