The ANC's support in the Northern Cape has fallen to 41.55% in provisional results, leaving 17 councils in the province hung, including Sol Plaatje, the municipality that includes Kimberley.
The party's provincial chairperson, Dr Zamani Saul, said on Saturday that the ANC accepts the outcome.
What the ANC says
“We are a bit disappointed – our biggest challenge was a low voter turnout,” Saul said. “We accept the outcomes and will work with what we have got.”
He said the party has 14 days in which to announce its mayoral candidates, and that the ANC would produce “an honest reflection of what happened and how we could have done better”.
Saul said the party would consider a government-of-national-unity-style model at municipal level, or what he called “mega coalitions”. ANC provincial spokesperson Sandiseni Sithole said: “The SACP remain our alliance partners.”
Sol Plaatje
According to the report, the ANC won no proportional representation seats in Sol Plaatje. That detail should be checked against the IEC's seat allocation before it is relied on.
What we do not yet know
- The final seat allocation for each of the 17 hung councils.
- Which parties the ANC will approach, and whether those talks will follow a province-wide approach or council by council.
- How the province's other parties, including the DA and EFF, will respond.
